There are two basic types of FAA-approved aviation oils used in general aviation aircraft piston engines. AeroShell Oils are used primarily during break-in of most new or recently overhauled four-stroke cycle aviation piston engines. We offer a full line of Phillips 66 FAA-approved aviation lubricants that include premium single and multiviscosity engine oils, as well as hydraulic fluids. Always check with your engine rebuilder or engine manufacturer as to which oil to use in your engine during break-in. This oil remains much thinner and more easily pourable at room temperature than single-grade oil. Mineral oil is used primarily for break-in of new engines or cylinders. Multi-viscosity petroleum-base oil such as Phillips X/C 20W-50 is similar to single-grade AD oil, but has a viscosity index (VI) enhancer which causes the oil to maintain a more constant viscosity over a wide range of temperatures. The appropriate grades of these AeroShell Oils are approved for use in four-stroke cycle certified aircraft reciprocating piston engines (except Porsche) and other aircraft radial engines which use oil to specification SAE J-1966 (MIL-L-6082) and which do not require use of an oil containing a dispersant additive. You can only use oil that meets the Mil-L 22851/SAE 1899 AD or Mil-L-6082/SAE 1966 mineral oil specification. Aviation engine lubricants are designed to lubricate, under a wide range of operating temperatures, engine moving parts such as bearings, gears, camshaft, rocker arms, cylinder walls, piston rings, push rods, and sockets and provide additional functionalities for engine cooling, cleanliness, and corrosion inhibition. AeroShell Oils are available in four different viscosity grades The suffix for each grade corresponds to the viscosity of the oil at 210F in Saybolt Universal Seconds. This product has a high viscosity index and low pour point compared with many other single-grade aircraft engine oils, allowing its use over a wide temperature. Multi-Viscosity Grade Mineral Oils are typically used for the break-in of aviation engines in which an all-mineral type oil is recommended. These oils do not contain additives except for a small quantity of pourpoint depressant (which is added when improved fluidity at very low temperature is required) and an anti-oxidant.
